Grand Teton Workshop

Back in September, Simply Canvas was a sponsor of the Grand Teton Workshop at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. The workshop was organized by SC customers Carl Gandolfo of Image Art Photography, LLC and Mark Sisco of Mark Sisco Photography. Holy Canvas! An 18 piece Canvas Display at ArtPrize

Stacy Niedzwiecki of Niedzwiecki Creative Solutions contacted Simply Canvas in early September to produce an 18 piece Canvas Display of her work for ArtPrize, one of the largest art competitions in the world. Taking advantage of our 30% off Canvas Frenzy Sale, she created a display of 7 8x12's, 5 20x30's and 6 24x36 gallery-wrapped canvas prints.

ArtPrize is an unusual competition. There is no official jury or curator. You submit your work then negotiate a space in one of many ArtPrize venues throughout Grand Rapids, Michigan. "It worked a bit like an online dating service - the artists searched out appropriate venues and the venues did the same searching for artists," said Stacy.

She decided to feature her work on canvas once she saw the place she was exhibiting. "The wall had a long mural running its entire length (36'). I needed to cover up the existing mural with something lightweight and easy to work for hanging. We covered up the entire wall with fabric, hanging the fabric with zip ties along some structural elements up above in the ceiling and hung 16 of the 18 canvas pieces and leaned the final two."

"The visitors have LOVED the exhibit (which hangs up until approximately Oct. 15th). Many people love the fact the photos go around the outside of the "frame", extended onto the back. They also consistently remarked on the vibrancy of the images," Stacy explained.

A Quick Glimpse into a Bridal Show Display

Earlier this month, Simply Canvas exhibited at the PPANE Fall Conference and Tradeshow in Nashua, New Hampshire and got to meet SC customer Lisa Engelbrecht of Creative Sparks Imagery, LLC. Lisa stopped by our booth to show off her display at a recent bridal show. Along with displaying canvas prints, Lisa also showcased one of our New Retractable Photo Banner Stands.

"We fell in love with the product when we went to WPPI and met Adam Fried while he was setting up his displays. He was very helpful in showing us a vision to up-sell our clients. We believe in order to sell canvas wraps, you have to show canvas wraps (and the bigger the better).

The New Face of Cancer Care

Our customer, Tamara Lackey Photography, recently took on an incredible photography project, "The New Face of Cancer Care," designed to showcase the opening of the new cancer hospital under construction at UNC Hospital. Asked to produce a stunning display and in quick turnaround, Simply Canvas printed over 30 gallery-wrapped canvas prints of the photographs they had taken to have on display at its opening.

"We photographed over 50 subjects over the past several weeks, and it was an incredible treat to see those amazing faces boldly and colorfully displayed on canvas, set throughout the lobby on easels, and lining the wall leading right up to the main lobby, in perfect harmony with the feeling of softness and peace embodied by the architecture.

Awesome Artwork and Canvas Samples

A few weeks ago, Heather Ahrens featured her Simply Canvas Prints on her Blog. We thought we'd return the favor...by giving you an inside look into her studio space!

Heather recently returned from backpacking through Europe and decided that she wanted to put together a canvas display in her home to showcase the photos she had taken. According to Heather, her home is also her studio space and where she meets her clients...a perfect opportunity to show them how they can display photos in their own space. "It serves as double duty to have both awesome artwork and canvas samples that clients can see. Each photo is a different size that I sell, ranging from 5x10 up to a 30x40."

She went on to explain her reasoning behind displaying her images on canvas, rather than other mediums. "I rather display photos on my wall than in an album. Wall photos get looked at more often than just sticking the photos in a book that will set on your coffee table on a shelf somewhere."

Since her blog post, her clients have voiced their love for her collections. "I had four different clients comment on my blog within the first 30 minutes of posting. They love the displays. I hope that my clients will order more canvas prints from their wedding and portrait sessions after they have seen them in person!"

A Dream Come True

In just a few short weeks, SC Customer Ron B. Wilson will be opening his very first commercial studio space in Jacksonville, Florida after 15 years of working out of a home office.

After doing freelance work for the Miami Herald and shooting portraits, weddings and fashion in New York City, Ron B. decided to settle down back in his hometown and really concentrate on his business. "Until last month, I had basically been a freelancer and working from a home office over the years. Then I attended Imaging USA and WPPI Conferences and gravitated toward Simply Canvas displays and would literally dream of having my work on your amazing products."

As a result, Ron B. decided to make the big move, signing his first commercial lease in the Historic Riverside/Five Points areas of Jacksonville, FL. "It's a cool area filled with graphic designers, artists and other creative types. It's a big step for me in my business and the location was very important to me."

Ron B. has been busy preparing his space for his grand opening taking place in September. One item he can check off his list: canvases. "The canvases came a few weeks ago and it looks amazing. A Customer's View on Canvas Clusters

Not your Typical Photography Studio

Simply Canvas Customer Rob Greer of Rob Greer Photography doesn't have what photographers would call a "traditional" studio space. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

"We're located near downtown Los Angeles in the heart of what is known as the Los Angeles Brewery Artist Complex. Although there are many buildings on the property, our studio is housed in the south facing wing of the former Southern California Edison Electric Power Station #3. The building itself was built in 1903 and is registered as a Historic Cultural Landmark by the City of Los Angeles."

The studio space totals over 5,000 sq. ft. It's four stories tall and includes a raised mezzanine deck, an outside patio area, client viewing area, a shooting location, bedroom, kitchen, workstation and drive in access. Not to mention large light structures, angled ceilings and skylights. The huge walls include great displays of framed and canvas prints. "All of my prints and canvases have to be huge because everything looks small on our huge walls. A 16x20 appears to have the same scale as an 8x10 might appear to have in smaller spaces," Rob explained.

A studio of that magnitude must receive quite a reaction by clients. "Every client, model and guest is always amazed. It's a great conversation started," said Rob.

And, the studio isn't just used for photography. According to Rob, the studio is available for rent by Hollywood studios and has been featured in an episode of "CSI Miami" on CBS. Making it not your typical photography studio.

Saint Mary's Wall of Hope

Our customer, Jackie McCool, recently brightened the walls of the NIC unit at a hospital in the Metro Richmond, VA area using canvases donated by Simply Canvas. The colorful gallery-wraps of now healthy babies who were once patients at the hospital will give hope and inspiration to families for years to come.

"It has been a huge success and has received such a fantastic response from past and present families that have seen the wall in the NICU. It is such an honor to be able to help families during such an uncertain time of their lives and it could not have been possible with your very generous gift!

The people in the photos are: The nurse (Dawn) who came up with the idea for the wall. My husband and youngest son who helped me hang the wraps (you will notice how they are floating in the window openings...there are a ton of restrictions about what you can do on hospital walls!!!). A "Show Big" Attitude from a Smart Customer

By displaying canvas prints in a home like atmosphere in her studio, Nicole Wickens-Smith of Green Door Photography was already on the road to success.

Then she decided to turn it up a notch...by displaying BIG canvases.

"I ordered the monster canvas (84 inches) for a couple of reasons, to show people how big you can go with a digital file (I still get asked about the quality of digital all the time) and to make the 30x45's look affordable. Right after I hung the canvases, I had a client come over for a pre-consultation. She immediately fell in love with the 84'' canvas."

According to Nicole, she placed the 30x45's on small walls so she could show her clients the appropriate sized prints for the walls space. When her client noticed the 84'' canvas, she said that she didn't have huge walls or tall ceilings. Turning Fine Art Photographs into One-of-a-kind Pieces of Art

Recently, Simply Canvas customer Jean Macaluso won first place in a juried call for a Gallery Exhibit at the Carlisle Arts Learning Center in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. And, there were no limits as to what subject matter she could present and in what way. The decision was too easy. She chose to display her black and white fine art work as Simply Canvas Gallery-Wraps.

Jean initially ordered three 30x30 gallery-wraps, using her 20% off Entire Order Discount. "I received them and was blown away!" She then decided to buy ten more 30x30 canvases, using the Buy One, Get One 50% off Discount. Jean told us that with the canvases, the exhibit screamed "New York City" exhibiting. The exhibit had a little bit of everything for art enthusiasts. Exhibiting alongside of Jean was potter Brooke Wiley, who showcased several pieces of her pottery. This artistry added to the professional gallery look, really exposing Jean's photographs as "art" as they were showcased with other traditional pieces of art.

Jean was pleased with the look of the exhibit as a whole. "I received so many compliments on my photographs themselves and the way they were printed as well. You all did an excellent job at producing superior canvases and I am grateful. Thank you for helping me and the Art Center reach a few of our goals for our community."

The Black and White Photography Exhibit began May 7th and run through June 13th at the Carlisle Arts and Learning Center in Carlisle, PA. Thanks for sharing, Jean!

A Great Idea from a Great Customer

Simply Canvas Customer Wes Hope of Hope Photography recently jumped at the opportunity to open new offices in the Knoxville Wedding Wonderland retail space that already housed a premiere florist, wedding planners and one of the nicest bridal shops in town.

When Wes needed to fill his space, he contacted Simply Canvas and was sure to mention his only roadblock. He had already taken advantage of our 30% and 50% off Sample Wall Discounts. "Move That Bus!!"- Richardson Studio Featured on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

The photography work of Simply Canvas customer Jeff Richardson, owner of Richardson Studio in Bloomington, Indiana, will be featured Sunday May 17th 8/7c on ABC in an upcoming episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Jeff teamed up with ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to unveil a new home for the McFarland family.

"The process was so different than what we imagined- seeing what goes into making a TV show is really mind blowing. We waited for approximately seven hours before we were given 60 seconds with the whole family. I had chosen a brick wall of the old house and I just pulled them together and let my instincts take over. I just held down the shutter and prayed I didn't even look at the back of the camera!"

Richardson Studio donated their services and contacted suppliers to give the McFarland's approximately $30,000 worth of photography pieces in efforts to help make their new house a home. Simply Canvas was pleased to provide all the canvas prints for free.

According to Jeff, the canvases were a huge hit. "Yes, they look outstanding! SC just knows how to do canvas. We had three labs offer to do our wraps for this project and I'm so glad you did them for us. The designers are very, very happy with them!"

Studio Makeover meets New Selling Technique: Turning your Studio into a Home

A few months ago, Jenni Ashton of Ulysses Photography stood in her studio space and thought, "there are too many pictures on my wall." So, she decided to redesign the studio into a home-like atmosphere, displaying her work on canvas in real home settings. "I wanted to create a space where clients walked in and said, I want my home to look like this."

Her idea was to design the walls with the intent of showing clients exactly how they can use it on their walls rather than displaying just pictures, like they had in the past. "Our goal was to find just a few of our recent favorites and then choose display methods that would truly showcase them as pieces of loved art and decor, the exact same way you might want beautiful photos and art pieces displayed in your own home." Displaying your images at industry tradeshows and expos is always a great way to market your studio and attract new clientele. Photoshop Guides...Your New Best Friend

Photoshop Guides are your new best friend...Use them! Guides help you position your images precisely. They appear as non-printing lines that float over the image. You can move or remove them and you can also lock them so you don't remove them by accident. You can find your guides under View in your Photoshop Menu by clicking Rulers. These will appear among the top and left side of your active window. Once the rulers are visible, click on them and drag down or to the right over your image. Guides will help when setting up your files for a gallery-wrapped canvas print or when you are creating a digital canvas to use in your marketing materials.

First Place in the photography category at the Manatee Fine Art Council in Lakewood Ranch, Florida went to Irwin and Carol Glazer of Glazer Creative Group. All of their fine art portraits were printed by Simply Canvas. For the past two years, the Glazers have shown their work at about 20 outdoor fine art shows. “We are very happy with the results. Given the poor economy, sales are way ahead of our expectations.” They shared the photo above of their booth, featuring their work on Simply Canvas gallery-wraps.

A Friendly Ordering Reminder...

When placing an order through our ROES ordering system, please keep the following guidelines in mind:
1. Please keep your images under 10mb or at 100dpi actual size. This size will work for any canvas print you order. If we don't think your file is large enough, we will contact you.
2. Don't forget to add the additional 4 inches to your overall dimension in Photoshop, to create a 2 inch border on each side for the wrap of a 1 1/2'' deep canvas (6 inches to overall dimension for a 2 1/2'' gallery-wrap).
3. JPEG's Only.
4. All files are opened by our technicians and checked before printing. They'll contact you if they have any questions or concerns.
5. Please email any sizing questions to printing@simplycanvas.com.
6. After completing the order, click on "queue." Do not close out your ROES ordering system until you see the confirmation message that your order has been sent.
7. If you do not receive a confirmation email of your order by the end of the next business day, your order has not been received. Please contact customer service.

How to Create a Word Wrap

When creating a word wrap, first determine your target front face size of your canvas and add 4'' to the height and width in order to allow a 2'' border for the wrap of the canvas (this is for a 1 1/2'' depth gallery-wrap...1 1/2'' for the sides plus 1/2'' to wrap around the back of the stretcher frame for a total of 2''). Pull guides from your rulers in Photoshop at 2'' from each edge to verify your template for your target size. Anything that lies inside the guides will be on the front face of the canvas and the border that you created will be what is used for the wrap of the canvas. Next, pull another set of guides at 1/2'' from each edge. This will leave you 1 1/2'' to work with for the text, so make sure the text remains centered between the two guides. This way your text will be on the sides of the canvas only and not wrapping onto the front or onto the back of the stretcher frame.

As always, we open and double check each image. So, if it looks like you have done this incorrectly, we will give you a call before we print.

Printing Tip of the Week: Dust Spots

You always want to make sure you check for dust spots in your file. They will print if they are in your file (s) whether you are printing on canvas or photographic paper. A simple way to check for this is to make an adjustment layer on your layers palette. Darken down the adjustment layer so the dust spots will be well defined. While you have your adjustment layer on, go back to your original layer and heal out the dust spots. Then you will have a clean file! Prints can be wiped with a slightly damp, clean, chemical-free cloth if become dusty.
Canvas can be tightened if becomes loose. You can purchase canvas retention spray at any craft store or on the internet. This spray can be applied to the BACK of the canvas. Please let dry overnight or for a few hours.
You can touch up small spots in the canvas with thin-tipped markers if your canvas gets scratched or damaged. Be careful when touching up specks. These archival ink correcting pens can be found at craft stores in an assortment of colors. Artists can also use paint to touch up small blemishes if needed.

Printing Tip of the Week: Rule #1 in File Preparation

The first step in setting up your file correctly for printing a standard 1 1/2 inch frame depth or 3/4 inch is to determine your overall target size for the front face of the canvas and then add an additional 4 inches to the height and width to create a 2 inch border on each side for the wrap of the canvas. If you're ordering an extra thick 2 1/2 inch frame, please add an additional 6 inches in dimension. This will create a 3 inch border on each side to allow for the wrap. Follow these simple instructions and your gallery-wrapped canvas print will wrap perfectly around the back of the frame where it is stapled and assembled! We just got back from WPPI in Las Vegas where we met dozens of our best customers. To help market at the show, we created 5,000 6"x6" canvas prints of the Vegas sign and put them in the attendees' bags. Did you get one? If so, let me know!

I don't think we will ever do that again since it was very expensive and my employees hated me for two months while I made them produce all 5,000 in addition to their regular work. ;-) Thanks to all of my employees for helping out with those. They were a great hit at the show.
